The Greatest Invention in the World

Mankind is the most intelligent and creative species on Earth. Dating back to the ancient times, our forefathers created many great inventions that not only greatly improved their quality of life but also brought drastic changes to the history of human civilization. The four grand ancient inventions in ancient China, paper making, gunpowder, printing and the compass, for example, are still remembered today for their great contributions to the progress of world civilization.

The Industrial Revolution also witnessed many important inventions. The invention of the steam engine marked the beginning of a new age, followed by other great inventions such as railroad, automobile, aircraft, telegraph, electricity, etc, all helping lay a solid foundation for a prosperous modern world.

Notwithstanding all these great inventions in the world, the computer, in my opinion, is the greatest invention so far. First, the invention of the computer makes an epoch. The computer is the only invention that initiates a brand new phase of world civilization, information age. The significant impact of the invention on various aspects of human life is lasting and profound. Second, the invention of the computer promotes knowledge explosion. With the assistance of computers, people find it easier to learn much more knowledge than ever before. Third, the invention of the computer substantially improves labor efficiency. As a result, the world industry had been developing at a unprecedented speed since the invention of the computer, leading to improved living standards of people. Fourth, the invention of the computer considerably speeds up scientific studies and technological innovations. Nearly all major achievements in science and technology since the invention of the computer, such as nuclear bombs, moon landing, telecommunications, etc., were based on computer technology.

I can list many other important reasons to support my opinion. However, the reasons I gave above, I think, is quite enough to convince you that the computer is the greatest invention in the world.
