How to learn English well?

The desire for learning English well is always with us, but many of us aren’t good at English. “How to learn English well?”I have been always asked the question by my students since 1996 when I graduated from Hunan Normal University.

In fact, it’s a question differs from person to person and from time to time. In my opinion, the following principles may be essential to our English study.

1. We'd better develop our interest in English .To develop interest in English study is not very hard. We may have the feeling of satisfaction and achievement from our English study when we are able to say something simple in English, talk with others in English.

2. it’s of great importance for us to form a good habit of reading aloud every day and listening to tapes regularly. Watching English movies, English TV programs, listening to English songs are also excellent and vivid English learning ways.

3. Try our best to enlarge our vocabulary as soon as possible. Vocabulary to English study is as money to life. Never just memorize single English words. Learn by heart the whole sentences and the phrases that contain the new words so we may know how to use the words.

4. If time permits, we may read Mini Chinese-English dictionary carefully from cover to cover, which may help us widen our sight and master knowledge in all aspects.

5. Try to retell articles and English stories in our own words.

6.On writing:

① We’d better prepare some sentences and expressions to be used before writing.

② Try to express one meaning in various ways.

③ keep writing English diary if possible.

7. Whenever we meet difficulties in our English study, we shouldn’t lose our heart. If necessary, We can turn to our classmates and teachers for help instead of giving up. Excellent personality is one of the decisive factors in English study. Persistence, patience, self-confidence and determination are badly needed.

I’m sure in doing so, we’ll make greater progress in our English study.
